Burn After Reading (2008)
- Available June 1
Burn After Reading is the Coen Brothers' take on espionage thrillers and it is as wacky as fans might expect from those filmmakers. It follows a pair of gym employees who discover a disc from a fired CIA worker who they attempt to use as blackmail.
The movie is filled with hapless, pathetic, and simple-minded characters who find themselves in a situation that is much less important than they seem to think. It also features an all-star cast doing great comedic work, especially George Clooney, John Malkovich, and Brad Pitt.
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
- Available June 1
While Elizabeth Olsen is now a huge star in Hollywood, Martha Marcy May Marlene is the movie that first introduced her to many people. Olsen stars as a young woman who has recently left an abusive cult and attempts to assimilate back into the real world while being gripped by fear.
Olsen delivers an incredible performance that hints at the amazing career she would have. The movie is a gripping yet small thriller that is uncomfortable, especially in the flashback scenes focusing on the cult with John Hawkes as the creepy leader.
The Professional (1994)
- Available June 1
Another big star who made a huge impression in an early role was Natalie Portman in Leon: The Professional. Portman plays a young girl whose family is killed by a corrupt cop. She then forms a bond with a lonely and skilled hitman in order to avenge their death.
The movie is a stylish action movie featuring a great stoic performance from Jean Reno as the noble hitman. Gary Oldman also delivers a terrific villainous performance as the corrupt cop. But it is Portman who steals the show in the complex and heavy role.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
- Available June 1
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire was one of the most unexpected Best Picture winners in Oscar history. The unique story stars Dev Patel as a young contestant on an Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." Using his life experiences in the slums of Mumbai, he is able to succeed in the game while attempting to reunite with his lost love.
The movie manages a grand feel as it traces this young man's life and the touching love story at its center. Though there are difficult and dark moments, it comes together in a really crowd-pleasing way.
Pineapple Express (2008)
- Available June 1
Those looking for a great comedy on Hulu should check out the hilarious action-comedy Pineapple Express. Seth Rogen and James Franco star as two stoners who find themselves targeted by corrupt cops and drug lords.
The movie blends action and comedy wonderfully in an entertaining way while having fun with some of the tropes of the action genre. There are endlessly hilarious moments and great performances, especially Danny McBride as a surprisingly resilient drug dealer.
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande (2022)
- Available June 17
The only new release premiering on Hulu in June is Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a sex comedy that seems to be quite different than most movies in that genre. Emma Thompson stars as a middle-aged widow who hires a male prostitute to fulfill some of her sexual fantasies.
The unique take on the story will no doubt intrigue a lot of viewers for a more grounded movie about sex. Thompson can always be counted on to deliver a great performance and it could be a breakout role for her co-star Daryl McCormack.
The Worst Person In The World (2021)
- Available June 13
One acclaimed movie that many people seemed to miss out on last year is the Norwegian comedy-drama The Worst Person in the World. The movie follows a young woman who navigates and struggles with her career, love, and who she really is over the course of a few years.
The movie was hailed as one of the best comedy movies of 2021 as well as being a thought-provoking story. Despite the adult protagonist, it functions as a very effective coming-of-age tale.
Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995)
- Available June 1
Fans of the Die Hard franchise are in luck as the entire action franchise is hitting Hulu in June. While it is tempting to start with the original classic, Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best sequel of the series and sorely overlooked as a great 90s action movie.
It follows John McClane as he teams up with a store owner who has planted bombs around New York City. The pairing of Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson is perfect and it is nice to see a more rundown and grimy John McClane.
Alien (1979)
- Available June 1
Another beloved franchise that will be appearing on Hulu in its entirety is the Alien series. While it also has some stand-out sequels, beginning with Ridley Scott's original Alien feels appropriate.
Even more than four decades later, the movie still holds up in terms of its thrills, excitement, and iconic creature design. It is also a lot of fun seeing Sigourney Weaver's Ripley coming into her own as a hero in this story.
