Alex's Backstory & Death Explained
Amelia Brooks Alex is one of the three main ghosts in the Netflix musical comedy-drama Julie And The Phantoms, and here’s his backstory and death explained.
What is Alex's backstory on Julie And The Phantoms and how did he die? Based on a Brazilian TV show of the same name, Julie And The Phantoms is a musical comedy-drama that aired its first season on Netflix in 2020. The title character Julie (Madison Reyes) is a 15-year-old high schooler and aspiring musician who has lost her passion for music following the death of her mother. However, when she accidentally summons a trio of ghosts who used to be in a 1990s band named Sunset Curve, she’s inspired to start making music again alongside them.
One of the late members of Sunset Curve is Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner) who played drums in the band when he was alive. In the second episode of Julie And The Phantoms, it’s revealed that Alex is gay and his parents weren’t too happy when he came out to them. Luckily, Alex had the support of his bandmates Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada) and Bobby (Taylor Kare) who became like a family to him. Things were going well for Sunset Curve back in 1995 too as they were about to play a gig that could’ve been their big break, but tragedy struck before the band hit the big time.
In the first episode of the very quotable Julie And The Phantoms, Sunset Curve is seen performing a soundcheck for their breakout gig after which Alex, Luke and Reggie decide to indulge in some dubious-looking hot dogs a guy is selling out of the back of his car. The hot dogs give the three bandmates fatal food poisoning, killing them before they make it to the stage and leaving Bobby – who stayed back to flirt with a waitress – the sole surviving member of Sunset Curve. Twenty-five years later, the deceased members of Sunset Curve were summoned by Julie and formed the show’s titular band with their newfound friend, while Alex found happiness in the afterlife after hitting it off with fellow ghost Willie (Booboo Stewart).
However, a revelation in the fourth episode of Julie And The Phantoms (which Netflix canceled in 2021) potentially put a different spin on the deaths of Alex, Luke and Reggie. It turns out their former bandmate Bobby changed his name to Trevor Wilson (Steve Bacic) and became a successful musician by passing off Sunset Curve’s music as his own. This spawned a dark fan theory that Bobby/Trevor killed off his bandmates by somehow poisoning the hot dogs they ate on that fateful night in 1995 so that he could become famous on his own.
Unfortunately, viewers of the series will never find out whether this theory is true, nor will Julie And The Phantoms follow up on Alex and Willie’s budding romance. Its cancellation after only one season left lots of Julie And The Phantoms' questions unanswered but with fans currently petitioning to save the show, perhaps there’s a chance – however slim – it could be revived on another network.
