Did Jax Ever Learn Gemma Killed JT In Sons of Anarchy?
Isabella Ramos JT's death in Sons of Anarchy was the darkest secret of the Teller-Morrow family, but did Jax ever learn his mother was involved, too?
Sons of Anarchy saw Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) learning the truth about his father’s death, but did he ever learn that his own mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal), was also involved in JT’s murder? In 2008, Kurt Sutter took the audience to the fictional town of Charming, California, and into the world of motorcycle clubs in Sons of Anarchy, an action crime drama TV series that lived on for a total of seven seasons, coming to an end in 2014. Sons of Anarchy saw the main characters dealing with a variety of issues within the club, which led to the revelation of some dark and painful secrets, such as everything related to the death of Jax’s father.
Sons of Anarchy followed Jackson “Jax” Teller, the club’s VP at the beginning of the series and the son of John 'JT' Teller, one of the club’s founding members. The series kicks off when Jax finds JT’s manifesto, in which he shared his ideas and views for the club, which were completely different from those of the club’s current President (and Jax’s stepfather), Clay Morrow. This, along with other problems within the club and with other groups, sends Jax on a journey that makes him question his relationships, family, and role in the club. Although Jax and company had to face many obstacles and tragedies, Sons of Anarchy paid extra attention to the drama within the Teller-Morrow family, and the biggest family secret was all about JT’s supposedly accidental death.
In 1993, JT was hit by a semi-truck while riding his bike, and he lived two days before dying from his injuries. It was revealed in Sons of Anarchy season 4 that Clay had forced Lowell Harland Sr. to sabotage JT’s bike so his death would be seen as an accident, and to better cover his tracks, he killed Harland after the job was done. Jax learned about this and so Clay had to meet “Mr. Mayhem”, with Jax killing his step-father in season 6 – but did Jax ever learn that Gemma was also involved in JT’s murder?
Why Jax Didn't Learn Gemma Killed JT (& What It Would've Meant If He Did)
By the time JT died, he had already had an extramarital relationship with Maureen Ashby, with whom he had a daughter, while Clay and Gemma were already together, though obviously in secret. JT’s ideas for the club didn’t match the direction the club was taking, and by then, Clay and Gemma were looking to take control of SAMCRO, and the only way to get it was by getting rid of JT. As mentioned above, Jax learned about Clay’s involvement in JT’s murder, and as killing a fellow club member is forbidden, Clay had to die per SAMCRO’s rules. However, Clay never revealed Gemma’s involvement, and even Jax’s wife, Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff), kept the secret. Maureen Ashby hid some of JT’s letters to her in Jax’s bag, and these revealed Clay and Gemma’s involvement. Gemma did her best to keep those letters away from Jax, and between her and Tara, they got rid of the ones that mentioned her, so Jax never actually learned that his mother also killed JT.
Had Jax learned that Gemma was also involved in JT’s murder, it's likely that he would have taken revenge on her, too. Gemma wasn’t a member of SAMCRO but she was an authority figure, so even though she wouldn’t have been subjected to the club’s rules and thus wouldn't have had to meet Mr. Mayhem, as happened with Clay, Jax surely would have come up with some sort of punishment. The reason why Gemma was killed in Sons of Anarchy wasn’t because of her involvement in JT’s death, but because she killed Tara and lied to Jax about it, which in turn unleashed a series of violent events. However, Sutter has implied that Jax knew the truth about JT and Gemma, somehow, but the show never confirmed nor hinted at it.
