As Lara Jean and Peter finish high school at the end of To All The Boys: Always and Forever, is To All The Boys 4 possible as a college-set sequel?

Now that To All The Boys: Always and Forever is officially out, what are the chances that To All The Boys 4 will happen? Netflix's smash rom-com franchise now has three installments chronicling Lara Jean and Peter's relationship, with the latest sequel focusing on their transition from high school into college. The ending leaves audiences wondering what lies ahead of them following their decision to start a long-distance relationship, setting up a sequel dealing with this next stage in life.

Based on the young adult romance novels by Jenny Han with the same title, the original 2018 film, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, followed Lara Jean Covey dealing with the disastrous aftermath of all her secret love letters being sent out. At the end of the movie, she officially got together with her crush Peter Kavinsky. Two years later, Netflix released the much-anticipated sequel To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. It introduced another recipient of her secret letters, John Ambrose McClaren — further complicating matters for the main couple, Lara and Peter, as they dealt with the realities of being in a relationship.

The third installment To All The Boys: Always and Forever further tested the core couple's bond as the two begin to plan their future — something that could play out in the potential To All The Boys 4. Will the story continue in a fourth Netflix original movie?

To All The Boys 4 Isn't Currently Planned (Will It Happen?)

At this point, there are no plans for To All The Boys 4. Originally, only To All The Boys I've Loved Before was on the docket, but after it became a hit for Netflix, the streaming giant ordered the sequels right away. Since the film series is based on Han's trilogy of books, Lara Jean and Peter's story is only written up until To All The Boys: Always and Forever. But this doesn't mean that a fourth film will never happen, especially if there's enough interest in it. It's possible Han could write another installment of the book series that Netflix could adopt; otherwise, Netflix can simply move forward with Lara Jean and Peter's romance by coming up with an original story.

To All The Boys 4 Release Date

Since To All The Boys 4 is not in the works (for now), there's no release date for it. If Netflix decides to go forward with another film in the franchise, it may be announced sometime in the next few months; however, chances are that a sequel won't be ready to release for at least a couple of years from now. On top of the coronavirus pandemic slowing down Hollywood productions, Netflix also has a stacked slate that they would have to go through first, effectively pushing the potential project far out.

To All The Boys 4 Cast

To All The Boys 4 would definitely bring back Lana Condor and Noah Centineo as Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky. It's also safe to assume that the Coveys will somehow make an appearance since Lara Jean is extremely close with them. Additionally, it may feature Emilija Baranac as Gen since she's also going to be with NYU with Lara Jean. The rest, however, depends on what narrative route the film will take; To All The Boys 4 can introduce new supporting characters to establish both Lara Jean and Peter's respective college lives.

To All The Boys 4 Story Details

Since Han's book series ends with To All The Boys: Always and Forever, the filmmakers would have to come up with an entirely new story for To All The Boys 4 — that's if Han doesn't write a fourth novel. But considering where the threequel ended, a possible sequel will tackle how Lara Jean and Peter actually deal with being apart. Perhaps it involves them both coming home for the holidays to spend time with each other until they have to part ways again.
