Released 20 years ago, Remember The Titans is a semi-biographical sports drama that – alongside the likes of Any Given Sunday and The Longest Yard – has been hailed as one of the greatest football movies of all time. Directed by Now You See Me screenwriter Boaz Yakin, the film is based on the true story of Herman Boone – a black football coach who guided the newly racially integrated team at Alexandria, Virginia’s T.C. Williams High School to victory during the 1971 state championship.

Remember The Titans was a big box office hit in 2000, grossing a total of $136.7 million worldwide against a relatively modest budget of $30 million. Success like that doesn’t happen often in the sports movie genre which tends to produce films that don’t always translate well to overseas markets. Remember The Titans had more going for it than two hours’ worth of touchdowns and off tackles, however – football is the focus but at its heart, the movie is a tale of overcoming adversity and discrimination.

Denzel Washington – Herman Boone

Black football coach Herman Boone is hired to train the T.C. Williams High School football team in the early 1970s – a time when racial tensions were riding high in the USA. He’s played by two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington.

Will Patton – Bill Yoast

Swamp Thing’s Will Patton plays Bill Yoast, assistant coach to the football team. While Boone and Yoast get off to a rocky start, they come to respect each other as they bond over their mutual love of the game.

Wood Harris – Julius Campbell

Defensive all-star Julius Campbell initially butts heads with his co-captain Gerry Bertier but the pair soon become fast friends. Julius is played by Wood Harris, who went on to receive critical acclaim for his portrayal of Avon Barskdale in The Wire.

Ryan Hurst – Gerry Bertier

Initially skeptical of the integrated team, linebacker and co-captain Gerry Bertier eventually comes to accept and appreciate his teammates. He’s played by Ryan Hurst, known for his roles as Opie in Sons Of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead.

Donald Faison – Petey Jones

Scrubs star Donald Faison plays running back-turned-linebacker Petey Jones, the Titans’ resident jokester.

Ryan Gosling – Alan Bosley

Ryan Gosling’s Remember The Titans role was one of his first film credits. He played country music-loving cornerback Alan Bosley.
