An excerpt from the upcoming Star Wars novel Shadow of the Sith reveals more information about Rey's parents, including their names. Portrayed by Daisy Ridley, Rey was introduced at the beginning of Disney's sequel trilogy as a desert scavenger living alone on the planet Jakku before she is lured into the galactic conflict between the Resistance and the First Order. From the moment at the end of The Force Awakens when she uses the Force to retrieve Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber from the snow during a duel with Kylo Ren, it was clear Rey would be the sequel trilogy's primary protagonist.

Since much of Rey's backstory was a mystery early on and Star Wars has a reputation for surprising parentage reveals, fans began formulating theories as to who the Force-sensitive heroine's parents may be. While Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi revealed that Rey's parents were nobodies (filthy junk traders who sold her off for drinking money), J.J. Abrams' The Rise of Skywalker revealed Rey to be the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, reversing a major theme from the previous movie. Rey's father is the cloned son of Palpatine, while much less is known about her mother.

Now, an excerpt from Shadow of the Sith (which can be read exclusively at USA Today) is revealing more information about Rey's parents, including their names: Dathan and Miramir. Written by New Zealand author Adam Christopher, the forthcoming Star Wars novel is set between the events of Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens. It follows Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian as they search for the planet Exegol and cross paths with Ochi of Bestoon, the Sith bounty hunter sent by Palpatine to kidnap Rey from her parents.

The new excerpt attempts to fill in some blanks that the sequel trilogy left regarding Rey's parents. For starters, this is the first confirmation of their names, Dathan and Miramir. The excerpt also provides some additional context for the brief scene in The Rise of Skywalker involving Rey's parents, who were portrayed by Billy Howle and Jodie Comer. While Rey's parents did technically abandon her on Jakku, it was to protect her from her evil grandfather, and they sacrificed their lives in order to protect her identity and whereabouts.

The full novel will likely reveal even more about Dathan and Miramir, including the latter's life as a junk trader, mirroring her daughter's eventual fate. While two legacy characters in Luke and Lando act as its main protagonists, the forthcoming novel also attempts to provide some more meaning for Rey's central character arc from the sequel trilogy, which was rocky at times and met with a mixed reception. Shadow of the Sith won't hit shelves until next month on June 28, and who knows what other revelations regarding Rey and her parentage the new Star Wars adventure may contain.
