Originally recognized for its fast-paced slapstick humor and surreal, daydream-style sequences, Scrubs enjoyed a highly successful run following the lives of Sacred Heart's fictional employees from October 2001 to March 2010. The series centered on the burgeoning career of perennial star-gazer John Dorian (Zach Braff) and his co-workers-turned-friends, including surgical resident Chris Turk (Donald Faison), a fellow intern and love interest Elliot Reid (Rick & Morty's Sarah Chalke), and nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes).
In addition to his close friends, J.D. frequently clashes with Sacred Heart's Janitor (Neil Flynn), with the pair developing a highly antagonistic relationship from Scrubs' pilot episode following a misunderstanding with a revolving automatic door. One of the series' longest-running jokes is the Janitor's lack of a real name, giving rise to numerous social media theories between 2001 and 2010 as to what Neil Flynn's character could be called. Scrubs certainly plays into this uncertainty and mystique surrounding Flynn's character, with J.D. only asking the Janitor what his name is in the series finale "My Finale," despite the pair working together for at least eight years canonically.
Although one of Scrubs' great mysteries during the series' airing period, the Janitor's real name in Scrubs is confirmed as Glenn Matthews. Creator Bill Lawrence stated in a 2011 Facebook video that The Janitor's name is Glenn Matthews, putting an end to the decade-long debate. Audiences had previously speculated that even the series' finale reveal could have been another red herring from Lawrence, who had previously let other theories for Flynn's character's name go unchallenged.
The lack of information regarding The Janitor's real name for so many years proved a fertile birthing ground for numerous theories on social media, with one idea, in particular, gaining serious traction. Several posters posited that The Janitor's real name was the same as his corresponding actor, Neil Flynn. This idea was backed by J.D.'s dream sequences in each episode, with audiences questioning whether The Janitor was little more than a figment on John Dorian's imagination. This idea certainly plays into Scrubs' surreal nature, leading many fans to believe that Flynn was breaking the fourth wall and playing a janitorial version of himself for years.
However, in Scrubs season 8, episode 19, "My Finale," J.D. finally asks the Janitor his name, putting these other theories to rest. In a rare moment of honesty and sincerity, the Janitor replies that his name is Glenn Matthews, capping the end of Dorian's character arc in the series. Bill Lawrence still manages to throw a final curveball at audiences, however, by having one of the Janitor's acquaintances call him "Tommy" from afar, but Lawrence's later interviews confirm this was one last cheeky red herring from a series packed with narrative misnomers. Just as Zach Braff and Neil Flynn's characters were able to bury the hatchet prior to the series' cancellation, Scrubs audiences can finally rest easy knowing the Janitor's real name is assuredly Glenn Matthews.
