What Song Ruby Sings When Killing People
Christopher Ramos Fear Street Part One: 1994 introduces viewers to Ruby Lane, one of the many slashers who serves Sarah Fier, who likes to sing while she's killing.
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Fear Street Part One: 1994.
Here's what song Ruby Lane sings while killing people in Fear Street Part One: 1994. There are a variety of slasher villains in Fear Street: 1994, riffing on various horror genre tropes, all of whom are controlled by the witch Sarah Fier. There's Ryan Torres' skull mask killer, an ax-wielding villain who was behind the Camp Nightwing massacre, and Ruby Lane, who carries with her a razor blade to kill her victims. Many more are mentioned dating all the way back to 1666, but it's those three who serve Sarah Fier in the first movie.
Presumably, each killer possessed by Sarah Fier in Fear Street's three parts has a unique backstory, and Ruby Lane's is largely revealed in Fear Street Part Two: 1978 thanks to her mother, Nurse Mary Lane. Ruby was a sweet girl (who even sang in a choir, fittingly), but was chosen by Fear Street's villainous Goode family to be their sacrifice to the Devil in 1965 and as a result she killed seven of her friends, her boyfriend, and herself with a razor blade. Since then, she's been on-call for Sarah Fier as a serial killer hunting down new victims in each subsequent generation. She first appears in Fear Street: 1994, but also features in Fear Street: 1978.
Each of the killers that get summoned in the Fear Street movies are pretty distinct, either thanks to appearance or weapon, and Ruby Lane (played by Jordyn DiNatale) is no exception. Her most notable trait, aside from the razor, is the fact that Ruby sings a song while murdering people. This really makes her stand out from the serial killer crowd.
Fear Street: Ruby Lane’s Song Lyrics Explained
The song in Fear Street: 1994 that Ruby sings while killing is "You Always Hurt The One You Love," which was originally performed by the Mills Brothers in 1944 with multiple covers over the years. It's a poignant song that speaks to the nature of love, and inadvertently causing pain to those want to hurt the least, with its lyrics including: "You always hurt the one you love, the one you shouldn’t hurt at all / Always take the sweetest rose and crush it till the petals fall / You always break the kindest heart with a hasty word you can’t recall / So if I broke your heart last night it’s because I love you most of all / And you always break the kindest heart…"
The song clearly fits Ruby Lane's character, although it becomes incredibly chilling in context. Ruby did kill people she loved - her boyfriend and friends - while under Sarah Fier's curse. It makes her actions in the past all the more devastating, while in the present-day turns her into a more sinister villain than the others. There's something particularly haunting about the character singing, serving as both a siren song to help lure in Simon but also a terrifying warning as she stalks her prey. She draws in Simon as he's attracted to her, so that makes even more sense that her song was about the one you love.
Since Ruby is serving the witch, then it's likely Sarah Fier is commanding her to sing the song, which shows just how twisted she is. Ruby Lane's backstory is expanded somewhat in the other Fear Street trilogy movies, particularly Fear Street Part Two: 1978, as her mother Mary is featured trying to find out what happened to her daughter. Fear Street Part Three: 1666 then goes on to explain more about Sarah Fier's origin story.
Will Fear Street Get A Part 4?
The Fear Street trilogy was a hit on Netflix in 2021, raising the question of whether more movies or other spinoff projects could be in the works. Certainly, since Ruby Lane and every other killer possessed by the curse over the years has a distinct story, the possibilities for Fear Street's future are almost endless. As of now, Netflix hasn't greenlit or announced a release date for Fear Street Part Four, but that doesn't mean it won't happen eventually. Leigh Janiak, a writer and director for the franchise, has expressed that Fear Street could grow as big as the MCU if given the chance, which makes sense given how many different killers and slasher shticks Fear Street Part One: 1994 sets up.
