Bo Burnham’s Inside Gets Official Marvel Studios Parody Merch
Christopher Ramos Bo Burnham's hit Netflix comedy special, Inside, now has new merchandise, and it's a parody of the Marvel Studios logo and the MCU films.
Bo Burnham's newest Inside merch is a parody of the Marvel Studios. Bo Burnham: Inside, released in 2021, is a Netflix special that features songs and sketches written and performed by Burnham. Burnham's newest special deals with serious topics - such as mental health, online performativity, and social justice movements - in a series of equally hilarious and tear-jerking scenes. One year after Inside's debut, Burnham released The Inside Outtakes on YouTube, which is an hour-long video of unused footage and songs from the Netflix special.
Praised for its dark sense of humor, catchy songs, unique cinematography, and unwavering sincerity, Inside is one of Netflix's most popular comedy specials. It was met with incredible praise by fans and critics alike, with the special scoring a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and would go on to be nominated for several awards. Inside won Burnham one Grammy and three Emmys, allowing Burnham to become the first individual person in history to win three Emmys in a single year. "All Eyes On Me," one of Inside's most popular songs, also became the first comedy song to ever hit the Billboard Global 200 charts.
On Twitter, Burnham released pictures of new Inside merchandise, all of which are playfully sporting a parody of the Marvel Studios' logo. Plastered on shirts, hats, mugs, and phone cases, red and white text reads "Inside Studios" - and, while the design is simple, it is unmistakably a play on the iconic Marvel logo. On the back of these shirts and sweaters, the text reads "The Next Ten Years," and shows various title cards to fictional Inside sequels. From one titled Socko, written in the same font as Star Wars' Solo, to Inside the Multiverse, referencing the latest Doctor Strange film, Burnham is not shying away from parodying as much Marvel content as possible. While Inside's popularity has been going strong over the past year, it was The Inside Outtakes that renewed interest in the comedy special. Featuring thirteen new songs, including alternate versions of songs that made it into the special, as well as a behind-the-scenes look into Inside's production, The Inside Outtakes has currently garnered over 4 million views. This resurgence in Inside's interest prompted Burnham to release new merchandise less than two weeks after The Inside Outtakes was posted.
Considering that much of Inside deals with issues like capitalism and internet celebrity, it's no surprise that Burnham opted to parody Marvel Studios in his merchandise. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently holding the title of the world's largest movie franchise, Burnham choosing to make his own merch based on the MCU is exactly the kind of irony Burnham so often employs in his comedy: like the MCU when their films are successful, Burnham's next ten years worth of highly-stylized Inside sequels are already fully planned out and slapped on a t-shirt. The new Inside merchandise is undoubtedly made for fans of the comedy special, capturing Burnham's ironic and blunt wit.
