Mallow isn't the toughest Trainer in her games, but she raises her Pokémon with care and enthusiasm. Here are her team members, ranked by strength.

In the Generation VII Pokémon games, Mallow plays a minimal but pivotal role in the plot. As the Trial Captain of Akala Island's Lush Jungle, she's the last Trainer the player faces before challenging the Kahuna. Like her counterpart in the anime, Mallow specializes in Grass-type Pokémon. She never gets a team of six, though, not even in her rematch battle after the player becomes Champion.

Grass isn't the best type in the main series games. In fact, it's arguably one of the worst, considering it's weak to five types and is only Super Effective against three. Mallow isn't the toughest Trainer in her games, but she raises her Pokémon with care and enthusiasm, and they eventually grow to become formidable opponents.

8 Lurantis

Lurantis is never a part of Mallow's official team. Instead, she only uses it in the Battle Tree, a facility in Alola where players participate in singles, doubles, and multi battles. All Pokémon are level 50 and get to hold an item.

Mallow has two Lurantis as optional Pokémon. Both have decent movesets, although neither have counter moves for some of their type's most concerning threats, mainly Ice, Flying, and Fire. One of them can set up Sunny Day, but only Talonflame can take advantage of the harsh sunlight. As a pure Grass-type, Lurantis has five weaknesses, four resistances, and no immunities.

7 Comfey

As a pure Fairy-type, Comfey has a lot of things going for it. It has only two weaknesses that it compensates with one immunity and three resistances. However, Comfey is also terribly frail and has a poor Physical Attack. Its Special Attack and Physical Defense are above-average, though, and its Speed and Special Defense are outstanding.

Mallow uses her two Comfey as aids in Double and Multi Battles. One of the two has both Grassy Terrain and Floral Healing, a combo that can constantly heal the partner Pokémon in just one turn. The other is less useful, as it only sets Leech Seed. However, Comfey is so frail that it can't last for long on the battlefield.

6 Shiinotic

Shiinotic is easily the weakest of Mallow's three official Pokémon. Its stats are pitiful, from its laughable 30 Speed to its underwhelming 45 Physical Attack. Both Special stats rescue this Pokémon from absolute oblivion, though, making it somewhat useful.

Mallow's Shiinotic has nothing to counter its quad weakness to Poison. It also lacks any attack to deal with Flying, Steel, Fire, or Ice-types. Instead, it has three Grass-type moves, two of which are a waste of space, considering it will most likely get OHKO'd. Shiinotic can be a valuable member of any team, but Mallow doesn't seem to know how to use it.

5 Toucannon

As one of Alola's regional birds, Toucannon is a decent if not outstanding Pokémon. It has exceptional Physical Attack but unremarkable in everything else. However, with only three weaknesses, two immunities, and two resistances, Toucannon can be effective under the right circumstances.

Mallow also has two Toucannon as potential options for her team. One makes excellent use of its high Physical Attack, with three great Physical moves, Beak Blast, Rock Blast, and Bullet Seed. Alas, the other is much worse, as it has Overheat, which ends up being a waste, considering Toucannon's pitiful Special Attack of only 75.

4 Talonflame

During its introductory generation, Talonflame was the Flying-type Pokémon to have. Thanks to its Generation VI ability, Gale Wings, all Flying moves' priority increased by one. However, Game Freak severely nerfed it in Gen VII so that Gale Wings would only work if the user had full HP. Talonflame's outstanding Speed comes at the expense of every single of its other stats, all of which are below-average.

One of Mallow's Talonflame can inflict devastating damage, though. It holds a Focus Sash, preventing it from being OHKO'd, and can counter with Flail. The other Talonflame is average in every sense of the way.

3 Sceptile

Among all Grass Starters, Sceptile is in the Top 5. It is overwhelmingly fast and has excellent Special Attack, but its low HP and Physical Defense, and slightly above-average Special Defense, make it somewhat frail.

Mallow's Sceptile holds a Sceptilite, allowing Mega Evolution. As a Mega, its Physical Attack skyrockets, and its moveset is full of devastating Physical Moves like Earthquake, Dual Chop, and the infallible Focus Blast. However, as a dual-type Grass/Dragon, it has a whopping six weaknesses, including a quad vulnerability to Ice. And while it has moves to counter five of them, it has nothing against the terrifying Fairy-type.

2 Trevenant

It's not that Trevenant is a terrible Pokémon because it actually has excellent Physical Attack, even if it comes at the expense of every other stat. But Mallow's Trevenant gets stuck with only three moves throughout all its appearances outside the Battle Tree, severely hindering its performance.

It doesn't help that those three moves are useless against four of its five weaknesses. Its moveset drastically improves in the Battle Tree, thanks to Earthquake, X-Scissor, and Focus Blast. But considering the heights this Grass/Ghost Pokémon can achieve, it's a shame that Mallow's barely scratches the surface.

1 Tsareena

Mallow's Tsareena has a surprisingly balanced and effective moveset. It has Zen Headbutt to deal with Poison-types and High Jump Kick for Ice-types. U-turn is ideal for getting out of pesky situations, and Power Whip can be dangerous, especially with Tsareeena's STAB damage.

All of Tsareena's moves are Physical, making excellent use of its incredible 120 Physical Attack stat. However, it has nothing against Fire, Flying, or Bug-types, and it can't even learn any Rock-type move, which does represent a complication for this otherwise outstanding Pokémon.
