Shonen Jump's New Hit Manga Destroys My Hero Academia in Manga Sales
Sarah Parker My Hero Academia is a wildly popular series in the current manga generation, but it was destroyed by sales of Shonen Jump's new series: Spy X Family.
The king of the current generation of manga, My Hero Academia, has seemingly been dethroned by Shonen Jump's new hit series - Spy X Family. Sales of the new series overtakes My Hero by a staggering 1,000,000 copies in the month of May. This news comes courtesy of Shonen Jump News - Unofficial, a Twitter account covering news of the manga publishing giant.
Spy X Family, by Tatsuya Endo, tells the story of Twilight, a spy tasked with keeping tabs on the leader of a rival nation. In order to do so, Twilight takes an alias and puts together a makeshift family - he adopts a daughter with psychic powers and takes on a deadly assassin as his wife. Using the makeshift family as a front, Twilight must play the role of a father to succeed in his mission. Put simply, Spy X Family is a weirdly wholesome story about murder and family.
Now, Shonen Jump News has posted May's manga sales in a Tweet, and it contains more than a few interesting details. In the month of May, sales of Spy X Family topped the charts and totaled 1,780,906 copies sold. This is followed by My Hero Academia, with sales totaling a measly 770,373. That's a huge difference. Not only did the former series overlap the latter and then some, but My Hero beat out other popular manga series like Jujutsu Kaisen, One Punch Man, and Tokyo Revengers by 300,000 copies. Currently, at sixty-three chapters compared to the other series having well over 100, the success that Spy X Family has had during May is mind-boggling. As surprising as it might seem to Western readers, this is far from the first time an exciting new manga has bested the popular superhero series. Tokyo Revengers destroyed My Hero Academia last August too, so this is far from a massive upset.
May is not an outlier in the spy manga's sales history either. In April, sales of the series totaled 2,303,434 copies compared to Jujutsu Kaisen's 2,022,059 copies sold. Given the current shonen manga generation's subject matter, it's wild that a manga series like this is not just beating out the competition, but absolutely destroying it. Given this is a slice-of-life manga with a focus on romance, it is truly impressive. Spy X Family is still pretty new considering the number of chapters it currently has compared to other series, but hopefully it can maintain that momentum and continue to dominate until its conclusion.
My Hero Academia is one of the top shonen manga series of the times, but like its predecessors, all good things must come to an end. As the superhero series nears its final arc, one might wonder what will take its place. It seems the answer to that question is already presenting itself. Spy x Family is Shonen Jump's new hit manga series, and its surpassing of My Hero Academia's immense popularity surely makes it a milestone for other series to reach.
