His father was an English professor at Augusta State University, while his mother worked as a Spanish teacher at Davidson Fine Arts High School. Although Christian's exact date of birth is unknown, he is believed to be currently 52 years old.

Since graduating from the University of Chicago, Christian has held varying professional postings throughout his career. He was a member of the Peace Corps from 1992 to 1994 before he left to become a Latin American currency strategist at Deutsche Bank in New York. He was also a senior credit strategist at CreditSights and head of Latin America fixed income strategy at Germany-based Commerzbank Securities (via The List).

Christian joined the investment management firm Pimco (Pacific Investment Management Company, LLC) in 2008 and has since become the company's managing director, president, and global head of the credit research group.
