The Righteous Gemstones season 3 is happening, but a lot of questions are still circling about it. Danny McBride's third series with HBO follows the Gemstone family, a group of greedy televangelists who try to keep their family and their ministry from falling apart. With season 2 just ending, many fans are already eagerly awaiting the show's return when The Righteous Gemstones season 3 finally drops.
Season 2 greatly expands the Gemstone dynasty, with many family members' pasts coming back to haunt them. In season 2, the Gemstones deal with deadly wrestling promoters, cycle ninjas, and a coup put on by Christian-themed musclemen. With the end of season 2, HBO has left the door open for plenty more wild stories for the Gemstone family, with The Righteous Gemstones season 3 possibly being the show's wildest yet.
Danny McBride's other HBO shows such as Vice Principals have been massive successes for HBO, and the crew is already excited to get to work on the third season. HBO has already renewed The Righteous Gemstones for a third season. Although not many concrete details have been given, the announcement was made just a few weeks into the show's second season, meaning it is successful enough for HBO to immediately greenlight The Righteous Gemstones season 3.
The Righteous Gemstones Season 3 Cast: Who Will Return?
The Righteous Gemstones features an ensemble cast, with the main characters being played by Danny McBride, John Goodman, Edi Patterson, and Adam DeVine, all of who can be expected to return for The Righteous Gemstones season 3. Characters that seemed like one-off villains such as Baby Billy (played by Walton Goggins) returned for season 2, and the show left the door open for Baby Billy, his wife Tiffany (Valyn Hall), and their newborn son to return. Some characters that are not likely to return are Junior (Eric Roberts) and Joe Jonas (playing himself), as it seems like their arcs are mostly wrapped up. Characters that died in season 2 like Lyle Lissons (Eric André), Lindy Lissons (Jessica Lowe), and Glendon Marsh Sr. (Wayne Duvall) will also probably not return.
The Righteous Gemstones Season 3 Story: What Season 2 Sets Up
One of the main storylines that could be carried over to The Righteous Gemstones season 3 is the Gemstones' murder of Lyle and Lindy Lissons. The show ends with four hitmen hired by the Gemstones hunting down the couple in Alaska and killing them. They did this as revenge for the Lissons trying to kill Eli, who sustained injuries that may influence future seasons of the show. Another thing that season 2 sets up is Zion's Landing, a resort that the Gemstones took over after the Lissons' deaths. This massive Christian resort is an incredible undertaking for the family, so The Righteous Gemstones season 3 could focus on the financing, construction, and management of the project.
The Righteous Gemstones season 3 will most likely follow in the footsteps of the show's first two seasons, though, and simply have another distant family member or friend come in and wreak havoc on the Gemstones' lives. In season 1 it is Gideon and Baby Billy, and in season 2 it is Junior and the Lissons. Who the show's next antagonist might be is unknown, but viewers can expect that some zany new villains will appear in The Righteous Gemstones season 3.
The Righteous Gemstones Season 3 Release Date Prediction
Since The Righteous Gemstones season 3 isn't in HBO Max's 2022 lineup, it will probably be a year or more before the Gemstone family returns. There was a large gap between the show's first two seasons, with season 1 ending in October 2019 and season 2 starting in January 2022. However, part of this long wait was due to COVID delays, something that the crew (hopefully) won't have to deal with in the production of season 3. HBO isn't known to rush shows, so The Righteous Gemstones season 3 will get done whenever the cast and crew feel ready. They do have to work around a few things, though, such as John Goodman's other show, The Conners. With all of this taken into account, it can be safely assumed that The Righteous Gemstones season 3 will appear sometime in 2023 or early 2024.
