Spoiler warning: This article contains story spoilers for Poppy Playtime Chapter 2.
The Game Theorists' MatPat has dived into Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 and emerged with a new theory about the mysterious claw-handed monster. Towards the end of Chapter 2, antagonist Mommy Long Legs is quite literally torn apart and her remains are dragged away by a mysterious mechanical hand. The teased new Poppy Playtime monster is the only part of this creature that can be seen in-game, but it's been enough to spark the morbid curiosity among many fans.
Poppy Playtime recently released its second chapter which introduced new characters like Mommy Long Legs, Kissy Missy, and the hand. Throughout the game, Mommy forces the player into a series of games to rescue the titular character, Poppy, and find a train that will take them out of the factory. Later the player is betrayed by Poppy and is sent deeper into the toy factory for an uncertain purpose. While there's been plenty of theories spawned from the release, further details were uncovered from an earlier build of the game, which featured alternative dialogue from Poppy in a secret ending for Poppy Playtime Chapter 2.
MatPat from The Game Theorists has a new theory about this claw monster and its identity. The YouTuber starts with the VHS tapes scattered throughout both Poppy Playtime chapters, specifically the ones that talk about Experiment 1006, a.k.a "The Prototype." Previously, MatPat theorized this prototype was Huggy Wuggy, but another tape in Chapter 2 has disproved this. Huggy Wuggy is Experiment 1170, with 1006 being the claw hand. Both tapes mentioning the Prototype display an image of a mechanical clawed hand, looking exactly like the one seen dragging Mommy away. Furthermore, the Prototype has an "unprecedented level of intelligence beyond that of all other test subjects," as proved by it disassembling an alarm clock and somehow rebuilding the pieces into a laser pointer. This makes the hand taking Mommy Long Legs away all the more disturbing, especially with her chilling final words being, "He'll make me a part of him." If the claw hand is set to be the antagonist of Chapter 3, it seems it's likely to be players' biggest threat yet.
This Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 Prototype theory isn't the only alarming idea to come forth, as there's also the real identity of Poppy to consider. MatPat previously assumed Poppy was former Playtime Co. employee, Stella Greyber, who gave a disconcerting speech about wanting to stay young and childlike forever as a doll could. However, players who paid close attention in Chapter 2 found some details that make Poppy Playtime Chapter 2's Stella theory not fit. Stella's voice is heard again during Mommy Long Legs' games, and her name is mentioned in documents discussing the experiments involving children and Mommy. A commercial for the Mommy toy at the beginning of Chapter 2 is dated in 1991, while the first Poppy doll was made around 1950. Therefore, if Stella was inside the original Poppy, she wouldn't have been around the experiments with Mommy.
If the nightmarish Prototype in Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 truly is gathering parts of other toys, Kissy Missy, the seemingly friendly counterpart of Huggy Wuggy, could be in danger. Poppy could as well, and perhaps that's why she still needs the player. After seeing that the arm has human bones attached to it, the player might be a target for the Prototype as well. These theories and more are just one more thing keeping fans eager for Poppy Playtime Chapter 3. However, MatPat isn't done theorizing about Poppy Playtime Chapter 2 just yet.
