Summary
- Olivia Rodrigo's absence from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4 was due to her busy pop music career.
- The show's creator, Tim Federle, mentioned that bringing back Nini would have reduced her role to a cameo, as there were already many new characters and storylines to develop.
- Nini's story arc involved transferring to a new school, going on a road trip to California with her parents, and deciding to pursue songwriting.
Olivia Rodrigo's absence from the new season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has been explained by the show's creator. On the first two seasons of the Disney+ meta musical comedy series, Rodrigo played musically inclined high school student Nini Salazar-Roberts. However, as her real-life career as a pop star began to take off, she pulled back to a recurring role in season 3, appearing in three of its eight episodes. She didn't appear at all in the show's fourth and final season, which just premiered in its entirety on August 9.
Variety recently sat down with creator Tim Federle to discuss High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4. During their conversation, he touched on Rodrigo's absence. While the door was implicitly open for her to come back, Federle shared that a reappearance of Nini was "never really seriously discussed" because there were so many other characters to focus on (including several original High School Musical cast members appearing as themselves) that she would have been reduced to a mere cameo. Read Federle's full quote below:
I felt really confident about that ending and Olivia is so busy with her songwriting career. At this point, we are introducing so many new people, the OG characters and we wanted to bring back other really important characters. I kind of felt like, with only eight episodes, it just becomes cameos as opposed to real stories. The offer was extended to her insomuch as Olivia knowing from me that she can always come back. But it was never really seriously discussed because there were new relationships we had to write for.
How Nini Was Written Out of High School Musical
Nini was one of the lead characters of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series when it originally premiered. In addition to starring as Gabriella in her school drama club's production of High School Musical, she was at the center of a major love triangle. When she returns from summer camp, now dating the handsome and talented EJ (Matt Cornett), her ex Ricky Bowen (Joshua Bassett) decides to get her back by auditioning for the musical and eventually winning the role of Troy.
Nini was already away from the bulk of her classmates when she transferred to a new school at the beginning of HSM:TM:TS season 2, though she returned before the season was over. However, her journey toward an arts education continued in season 3, which was set over the course of a single summer. While most of her friends were at a drama camp, she took a road trip to California with her parents, deciding to move there permanently and pursue songwriting.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has since made room for additional characters after Olivia Rodrigo's Nini exit, including Matthew Sato as hotshot sitcom actor Mack Alana and Kylie Cantrall as social media influencer Dani. In the meantime, Ricky's affections have firmly transferred to Gina Porter (Sofia Wylie). However, their romance is not without its own tribulation, as he soon learns.
